Will Egypt become the first “Mother and Baby Friendly” country in the world?
Egypt’s National Breastfeeding Campaign is planning to launch a campaign to improve breastfeeding and infant feeding practices in Egypt, aiming to set an example for the wider Arab region. The campaign is led by the Egyptian Lactation Consultants Association, a member of IBFAN Arab World, and will be launched late in 2009 or early in 2010. The campaign is supported by IBFAN Arab World, the Egyptian Ministry of Health, Egypt’s National Council for Childhood and Motherhood, WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office and UNICEF.
IBFAN Arab World are contributing to this challenging project with a focus on four areas and working with four partners:
- IBFAN Asia, to conduct the World Breastfeeding Trends Initiative (WBTi);
- IBFAN’s International Code Documentation Centre, to draft new marketing laws for breastmilk substitutes;
- the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week, this year themed “Breastfeeding – A Vital Emergency Response”;
- IBFAN Geneva, to run training sessions on human rights, child rights, and maternity protection in the workplace.
